What is MINT?

The Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) is an international organization of trainers in motivational interviewing, incorporated as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit charitable organization in the state of Virginia, USA. The trainers come from diverse backgrounds and apply Motivational Interviewing in a variety of settings. Their central interest is to improve the quality and effectiveness of counseling and consultations with clients about behavior change. Started in 1997 by a small group of trainers trained by Dr. William R. Miller and Dr. Stephen Rollnick, the organization has since grown to represent over 41 countries and more than 30 different languages.

The Four Editions of Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing has evolved through four key editions:

  1. First Edition (1991): Introduced the foundational principles and techniques of MI, emphasizing the spirit of collaboration, evocation, and autonomy.

  2. Second Edition (2002): Expanded the theoretical underpinnings and applied MI to a broader range of behaviors beyond addiction treatment.

  3. Third Edition (2012): Refined the core skills and processes of MI, incorporating the four fundamental processes: engaging, focusing, evoking, and planning.

  4. Fourth Edition (2023): The most recent edition further integrates MI into various professional disciplines, highlights advancements in MI training, and strengthens its application in diverse cultural contexts.
